Court reporters are also called a court stenographer or a transcription specialist. Their job is to record proceedings and important meetings in a court of law or between people engaging in an official manner. They are responsible for making sure that all records they produce are accurate and unbiased because their transcripts are often the only legal evidence for the proceedings.

Court reporters also make records of important conversations, meetings, speeches and other events when necessary for legal evidence. Court reporters also work providing real time captioning for television and webcasting and they also offer translation services for people with hearing disabilities. They are called captioners. This is a very good career in a less formal environment that can offer much higher compensation than that of a traditional court reporter.

Government agencies employ court reporters to work in courts, public offices and other legal agencies. This is a very good field to enter, and there are many jobs available due to the large volume of court hearings and records that need to be maintained.

There are many colleges that have degree and certificate programs for court reporting. There are also good online court reporting schools. There are degree programs that specialize in court reporting. Most programs at court reporting schools include English grammar, technical writing and law, with a focus on developing excellent writing, listening and multitasking abilities. Students also learn techniques such as electronic reporting and voice writing. There are various degree programs that are offered, but the quickest way to be a court reporter is to earn an Associateā€™s degree which takes around 18 months. Three are 4 year degrees available and they also depend on what you choose to specialize in.

Due to increased and improved technology courses can be taken online through online court reporting schools .This has opened up the field to many more people that may have not had the opportunity to study traditionally. Today court reporters are in high demand and there is no decline being predicted in the future.
